Ilene, Ikea, and Instruments
October 18, 2009 at 10:52 pm
On October 2nd, Ilene came out for another visit. Sylvie loved snuggling and playing with her, and Ilene couldn’t believe how big she had gotten in such a short time.
On Saturday, we decided to go to Ikea. Which, in retrospect, was one of our dumber ideas. The drive, the crowds, the lack of places to nurse*…ugh. Oh well, live and learn. Actually, Sylvie enjoyed herself quite a bit until the end. But that harrowing car ride back still haunts me to this day.
Sunday was much more subdued, and we took a lovely autumn walk through Davis Square. We checked out the local stores and got to see Emperor Norton’s Stationary Marching Band practice their tunes for the following week’s Honkfest. Sylvie loved checking out the various instruments and dancing in the Bjorn along to the music.

*What is Ikea thinking? They act like they’re all progressive with this “family-friendly changing/nursing room,” yet that’s all it is: one room. With a lock on the door. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. So, for example, a mom goes in with plans to change her baby, settle him down, maybe use the bathroom herself, and nurse. Then, let’s say, another mom comes along and knocks on the door and finds it occupied. She’s supposed to what? Wait 30 minutes to feed her own frantic baby? Forget that! I sat right on a bench in the midst of the madness and gave Sylvie her lunch as I watched another weary mom wait for what seemed like hours to use that room. Ikea is on the right track with this concept, but clearly more thought was needed in executing it. I’ll have more to say about this subject when I write about the Topsfield Fair. Maybe I should review nursing stations for a living.

You should write a polite, stern letter to Ikea!
